Friday, 15 May 2009, Professor Timothy Garton Ash, Triumph to crisis? Europe 1989-2009. Professor Timothy Garton Ash – the Oxford University’s lecturer, international policy, human rights and Central Europe expert is going to deliver a lecture on the subject of the situation of Poland and Great Britain in the changing Europe. The event will inaugurate the Polish-British Round Table Debates, which are going to take place in Villa Decius in Krakow. The aim of this year’s meetings within the Polish-British Round Table Debates, entitled “Agendas for stormy times – EU Energy and Foreign Policy”, is the diagnosis of the difficult times in the energetic and foreign UE policy as well as giving future recommendations. The main topic will be: energy and climate changes, financial crisis and the European Neighbourhood Policy.
The Polish-British Round Table is a meeting of dozens of politicians, diplomats, officials, intellectuals and representatives of Poland and Great Britain, dedicated to the most important issues on the European agenda. It was formed as a result of cooperation between demosEUROPA – the European Strategy Centre, Unia&Polska Foundation, the British Chatham House, European Studies Centre at Oxford University and the Villa Decius Association.
The last year’s event, which took place in Krakow on 9-11 May was dedicated to the special relationship between Poland, Great Britain and the United States and resulted with a very successful exchange of thoughts and publication of the conclusions in the European press. This is why the Round Table meeting is held again this year, in the hope of it becoming a traditional forum of the Polish-British debate.
The inauguration of the conference will be joined with the public debate in the Jagiellonian University’s Collegium Novum Hall. The following part will be based on a closed seminar in Villa Decius, counting about 30 people, organised thematically: energy and climate changes, financial crisis, innovative society, UE policy against Russia and neighbourhood policy.
