Call for Applications: Winter Seminar 2018

Media and Democracy 
Law, Politics, Pluralism and Society in Central and Eastern Europe 
26 February – 2 March 2018 Győr, Hungary at Széchenyi István University Faculty of Law and Political Sciences

⇒ The interdisciplinary intensive seminar offers a university course and a forum for students and young researchers.

⇒ Noted experts, lecturers and professors from different Central European universities help to discover and discuss legal, political, social, economic and EU-aspects concerning media & democracy in Europe and in our region.

⇒ The basic idea of our dialogue is that democracy and media are dependent on each other, while European standards face particular challenges in the Central and Eastern part of the continent. Main issues of discussions are: o concepts of democracy and values of the European Union; o media in politics, politics in media; o media pluralism and freedom of expression (traditional and post-modern structures); o European Court of Human Rights and constitutional courts as safeguards of democracy.

⇒  The seminar will include academic lectures + workshop opportunities with the active contribution of participants + off-campus events in Budapest + cultural evenings presenting the participants’ countries. Program details Venue – official programme: Széchenyi István University, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, Building “J” H-9026 Győr, Áldozat str. 12. (Hungary) Period: 26 February – 2 March 2018 (academic program from Monday to Friday).

⇒  The Seminar is open for higher education students and PhD candidates as young researchers from any fields of legal, economic, media, communications, social or international studies from all over Europe.  20 places are provided for incoming students from abroad.

⇒  The language of the Seminar is English.

⇒  We present certificates on the participation and contributions.

⇒  You can obtain 5 ECTS credit points. Costs Registration fee: 60 EUR (shall be paid at the registration) that covers the o accommodation in the brand new student hostel of the University (few minutes walk from downtown), o technical background, handing-outs and the publication of the scientific results of workshop sessions, o cultural programme, including diners and visit to the Parliament of Hungary in Budapest. 2 Application deadline: 20 January 2018 How to apply to the Winter Seminar 2018? The application shall include:

  • application form (APPLICATION FORM)
  • abstract in case you intend to present a paper/topic (not compulsory)
  • letter of recommendation from a professor (not compulsory but recommended)
