Sergio Vieira de Mello Prize – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the years 2002-2003, edition 2004

The ceremony of awarding the Sergio Vieira de Mello Prize – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the years 2002-2003 took place within the framework of an international conference “Rebuilding Peace in Post-Conflict Communities. Role of media and Civil Organisations” on 30 September 2004 at Villa Decius, Krakow. Among the laureates there are: Tadeusz Mazowiecki (In the “individual” category) and One World Association (In the “NGO” category).

 

 

 

 

  • Tadeusz Mazowiecki

 

Politician and journalist, lawyer . One of the advisors to the Solidarity trade union in 1980, later editor of the weekly ‘Solidarność’. An active participant in the Round Table talks of 1989. The first non-communist Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland (1989-1990) since the late 1940s. Co-founder and one- time leader of the Democratic Union Party, which later became the Freedom Union. He was the Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights to the former Yugoslavia in 1992-1995. In 1998 he was awarded the French Legion d’Honneur.

 

  • One World Association

 

A non-governmental organization, which carries the mission of promoting peace and mutual understanding by means of international and national voluntary programmes and education. The Association was established in 1992 and from the very beginning the Association acts as a part of the international organization Service Civil International (SCI). According to The Association’s aims volunteers perform various functions by working for several social groups (disabled, refugees, people in difficult life situations).
