International Conferences

The Villa Decius Association, continuing the ideas and activities of our benefactor and patron – Justus Ludwik Decjusz – has from the very beginning of its existence aimed at establishing a forum for the exchange of ideas among the representatives of various cultures, nationalities and areas of interest. Supported for years by scientists, diplomats, journalists and non-governmental organizations, we have created a platform for dialogue and a meeting place for discussions on many urgent contemporary issues, such as the promotion of human rights and respect for human dignity, the fostering international responsibility and solidarity with the victims of political and ethnic conflicts. International conferences and debates, with the participation of the most distinguished representatives of the world of science, culture and politics, have made Villa Decius into what Jacek Woźniakowski wanted it to be– “a place of meetings and cooperation, witness to and participant of the culture emanating from Europe”.

In 2012, the award ceremony for the Polish Sergio Vieira de Mello Award was accompanied by the international conference “Tolerance. Models, metamorphoses and implications”. The conference was a joint initiative of the Villa Decius Association and the History of Ideas Research Centre of the Jagiellonian University. The leading issue was tolerance, its essence and contemporary practice.

In 2011, we held a conference on “The Borderless People”, which was co-organized by the Association and the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Poland. The event gathered many eminent intellectuals, politicians and experts who made an attempt to analyse the political and cultural sources of conflict and contexts for providing humanitarian aid. The conference took place immediately before the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

In October 2012, Villa Decius hosted a debate on Eastern Europe, its future prospects and challenges for the Eastern Partnership, the EU flagship initiative aimed at accelerating reforms in the region. The meeting was organized in cooperation with the Polish-Ukrainian Cooperation Foundation PAUCI and provided an opportunity for European leaders and intellectuals to analyse the various models of political transformation.
